Chinese Pop Culture Art
In the new era, pop culture art is extant, in a number of forms, in China. There is political art, some, in the form of dark or ironic humor of the last half century, and others, in the form of commentary about the present. Other forms of pop art cover other subjects, both internal and external. For example, in our gallery, we have a painting of Hillary Clinton, done in an almost black and white motif, and it reminds me of Andy Warhol's Marilyn Monroe: in modern China, a famous blond is a famous blond is a famous blond. In the picture, below, we show Guang Zhi Zhang's oil on canvas: "House and Car". If you are not familiar with life in China, today, you may not see the pop culture commentary in the piece. The reality is that having a car means that you are really rich, even if it's a Honda (imports are expensive in terms of buying power of the Chinese Yuan). Most people, in fact, would strive to buy some sort of house, first. But having a house and a car marks you as part of the elite well-to-do very successful set.

Guang Zhi Zhang is a well-known artist who has been around for several decades. His first painting was an 8 foot tall portrait of Chairman Mao, while in the Red Guard youth group. Later, he joined the Red Army and was assigned to paint pictures of Mao for the army. His paintings vary from impressionism to realism, and, apparently, also include some pop culture art.
